Flashback Friday – IDS Center

Happy [Flashback] Friday, all! We’re taking you way back to a time before digital cameras… when the IDS Center emerged as the premier tower of downtown Minneapolis! While Baker Associates has a rich history of working on landmark structures in the Twin Cities, this building remains one of our favorites!

Completed in 1989, the IDS Center is a skyscraper located at 80 South 8th Street in Minneapolis. The building rises 792 ft (241 m) above the ground and has 57 floors of office space. Designed by architect Philip Johnson and built by contractor Mortenson Construction, as of 2019, it remains the tallest building in Minnesota.

The IDS Center is an iconic part of the Minneapolis skyline. It was featured in the 1999 movie “Drop Dead Gorgeous.” And, more recently, as a backdrop for both Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift’s music videos. The building also houses major corporate tenants such as Target Corporation, US Bank, and Wells Fargo.

The IDS Center is a shining example of the power and beauty of modern architecture.
The IDS Center reminds us of the power of engineering and architecture to shape our cities. Its striking silhouette stands tall in downtown Minneapolis, creating an iconic skyline and inspiring generations of professionals to strive for greatness. We’re proud to be part of its history! Thanks for tagging along with us on our Flashback Friday journey! Enjoy.
